This black chirimen silk kimono is called tomesode and is worn by married women for formal occasions. This particular piece is from Meiji period (1868-1912) and is depicted with a symmetrical design of graceful Japanese cranes standing in large auspicious flowers, such as peonies and chrysanthemums. There is also some small embroidery on the flowers. The colors of the design are almost monotones as if it is a piece of black sumi ink painting. The subtle and delicate beauty was respected during this period. Accordingly, this particular piece is a good representation of Meiji period. This beautiful design is continued to the bottom of the interior of the kimono. There are a total of five large and rare family crests on the both back and front of the kimono. The lining of the kimono is red silk and the condition of the kimono is excellent.
