A Set of Five Katazome Tenugui Towels

Age: Circa Early 1900s
A set of five very rare Japanese tenugui-towels shows five different patterns. Each towel is made from delicate 'momen' cotton (almost gauze like) and starched for "freshly-folded" look. The towels are then partially belted with a 'noshi' paper to indicate that the towel was gifted as a favor for some ceremonial occasion. The name of a temple who distributed these towels for "the visitor/guests" is written in sumi ink. Each of these five towels has a different floral katazome-stencil dye pattern and they all have a solid-color border. This type of katazome piece is very rare and absolutely lovely folk art of Japan.
