Fushimi Clay Doll Michizane Sugawara This almost perfect conditioned Fushimi doll is approximately from the early 1900's. The doll is made from clay and painted the front side of the doll as traditional. The doll's bottom is "closed" and there is a little piece of clay inside to create a rustic bell sound. This particular figure is Fujiwara-no-Michizane, who once achieved a position of the imperial court with his sincere efforts but eventually was demoted to a minor official position of Dazaifu, Kyushu by his rival's plot. After Michizane's lonely death, many disasters struck in Kyoto. In order to calm down angry spirit of Michizane, the imperial court built the first Tenjin shrine in Dazaifu and promoted Michizane as Tenjin-sama, Spirit of Scholarship. A doll like this was purchased by those who visit a Tenjin shrine as a souvenir or a good luck charm for students who wish to succeed their studies and entrance exams. This clay doll has a rustic, well-aged, appearance yet in such an excellent condition Many of these types of dolls were originally inspired by the Fushimi clay dolls in Kyoto. Dolls like these were taken home as a souvenir from visiting religious sites. This particular doll is assumed to be a Hotei which is a member of seven happy gods, Shichi-fuku-jin.
