Hanamaki Clay Doll Tai-guruma, Karako & Red Snapper This cheerful clay doll is from Iwate prefecture of the Tohoku region, Japan. The doll is regionally named as Hanamaki, which is also the name of a city in current Iwate prefecture. The original production of Hanamaki doll is back to the early 1700s but its production was unfortunately declined during the Meiji era (1968-1912). Comparing to renowned Fushimi-dolls, Kyoto, sizes of Hanamaki dolls are much larger and they possess somewhat more ³laid-back² atmosphere, which, we believe, attribute to the rural and open environment of the region. This particular doll is a Karako-boy in a Chinese costume that is leaning against a large red snapper, 'tai.' The both figures are on a wheel and there is a splash of water right above the wheel. The back of the doll is traditionally painted in plain white, and the bottom of the doll is opened. The doll is assumed to be from the Meiji era and the condition is excellent, no repair or obvious damage. The dimensions are: 9 1/2" Wide 7 1/2" High 3 1/2" Deep Questions? info@ichoya.com |
