Hanamaki Clay Doll Tai-guruma, Karako & Red Snapper This cheerful clay doll is from Iwate prefecture of the Tohoku region, Japan. The doll is regionally named as Hanamaki, which is also the name of a city in current Iwate prefecture. The original production of Hanamaki doll is back to the early 1700s but its production was unfortunately declined during the Meiji era (1968-1912). Comparing to renowned Fushimi-dolls, Kyoto, sizes of Hanamaki dolls are much larger and they possess somewhat more ³laid-back² atmosphere, which, we believe, attribute to the rural and open environment of the region. This particular doll is a Karako-boy in a Chinese costume that is leaning against a large red snapper, 'tai.' The both figures are on a wheel and there is a splash of water right above the wheel. The back of the doll is traditionally painted in plain white, and the bottom of the doll is opened.
